Here is a very nice and very historically interesting offering from
GFM Wilhelm von List.
These four items were bring backs of Richard H. Zoller.
The first piece is a letter to von List from Alfred Rosenberg. The letter is
dated 29 July 1943,
after von List was dismissed from his position by Hitler. The letter thanks von
List with his efforts with the
Rosenberg Sponsored Mount Athos Expedition in Greece. This was a very
significant event and there are several articles
about this to be found on line. The letter measures 8 1/4 inches by 11 3/4
inches and is from Rosenberg's office “Der Beauftragte des Führers”.
The piece has several folds and the center fold has a 3 inch
tear on the right side. There is also a one inch tear at the top of the piece.
There is an embossed eagle above the letter head. Rosenberg's signature is
strong and clear. The letter reads as follows:
Commissioner of the Führer
for monitoring the NSDAP's
total spiritual and ideological training and upbringing
Generalfeldmarschall List,
in the field.
===========
My dear Field Marshal!
Within the scope of the work of the Special Unit Greece, Special Staff** Rosenberg for the occupied areas, an expedition to the Monastic (Monks) Republic of Athos, among other things, was also carried out. A partial result of this expedition has been compiled in an illustrated book "Land of Monks, Athos," which is now available for delivery.
The scientific findings of this expedition deserve particular attention in that it has been possible to make old research documents accessible which the French, and later the Americans, sought out during the World War. Moreover, it is a witness to the fact that, despite the great efforts of the war, it has [still] been possible for us to bring forth such a book.
I am taking the liberty of enclosing with this letter an example of this work, and at the same time request that you view this as a small token of appreciation for the help and support that the task force received from you.
Heil Hitler!
Rosenberg
The next three items are book by Mihai Antonescu, a pro Nazi and
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
of Romania during the war. The three books measure about 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches
each. The first book " Rumaniens Heiliger Krieg"
is dated 23 June 1941. It is 21 pages and the first page is signed by Anontescu
and presented to GFM von List. The second book "Pro Germania"is from 1941 also,
and is 42 pages and has the same type of dedication to von List. There is a
small stain on the top of the front cover and the cover is loose from the pages.
The pages are glued, so this is an easy fix. The last book "Warum Wir Kampfen is
dated 1942. It is 40 pages long. The cover shows a bit of fading but it still
sound. This one is signed and dedicated also.
GFM von List commanded the 14th Army during the invasion of
Poland and was awarded the Knights Cross. He later commanded the 12th Army in
France and Greece. In 1942 he was put in command of Army Group A, where he was
relieved of his command on September 9th 1942 by Hitler, for not pushing the
advance in to the Caucasus. He spent the rest of the war at his home and never
returned to duty. He was the ninth general promoted to General Feld Marshall
during the Third Reich period. List was tried at Nurmburg and found guilty, he
was sentenced to life in prison. He was released in 1952 due to illness, but
lived until 1971.
A very interesting lot with historical significance.
