This is a very rare piece of insignia for the
Gruppo Autonomo Cossacchi Savoia, a battalion of
Cossacks formed by the Italian 8th Army in September of 1942. When the Italians
left Russia, the unit returned to
Italy with them. The Cossacks did not like serving under the Italians and were
eventually absorbed into the
German Army under Major-General Domanov. They would end up fighting
Italian partisans in Northern Italy.
The Cossacks were repatriated to Russia after the war and most were executed or
send to spend the rest of their
live in labor camps.
The insignia itself is multiple pieces of colored wool sewn to a field gray wool
backing. The materials are consistent with other
original field made volunteer insignia I have handled over the years. The piece
measures about 3 1/2 inches across the top. This example was purchased
from a vet's widow who claimed that her husband processed POWs at a cage
in Europe (possibly Austria) at the end of the war. As the POWs came in, he
would remove the insignia off the tunics as war souvenirs.
A chance to own a rare piece of Cossack Volunteer Insignia.
